The Smart Way to Conduct an Effective Job Search
Assessments: Determine the kind of work you wish to do and the companies you want to work for – It is important to keep in mind that you are looking ahead; not back Self Assessment: At Rung #4, take time to critically review your resume and cover letter. In today's job market, there many hundreds of applicants seeking the same job. Ask yourself, am I truly highly qualified to apply for the very few available jobs out there? Will I be the best candidate? If not… what can I do to improve my situation? Improve Your Chances: Take a class or classes at a trade school or community college. Add these as “in progress” to the education section on your resume. Classes also provide more networking and/or job placement service opportunities. Volunteer in the community to show how you utilize your time and initiative constructively. Take temp jobs in the field you wish to get into. A great way to find out about the inside of a company is to work there on a temporary basis. Super Networking: You will need to check on
possible job opportunities with all sorts of people including:
Past and current co-workers, Supervisors/Managers you worked
for, Vendors you have done business with, Reputable employment
agencies where the employer - not the job-seeker - pays. Contact
your friends and ask them to talk about you to their friends
and keep the chain going. Do the same with relatives, their
friends, their relatives, etc. Get involved in social groups (clubs,
a church, trade associations, school classmates and alumni).
Think of yourself as an aggressive sales person talking to everyone
and selling a great product: you. Use the the Internet: Check out and register on Job hunt sites (Indeed.com, Monster, USA Jobs, etc), Look at company websites as well as Social sites (Linked in, Facebook, etc. Even Twitter!) Tweet away! OK. Ready to take the next step? You are getting closer to the top of the ladder. Rung 5
